2 killed, 2 hurt in crash

SALINEVILLE — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a car crash that killed two people and injured two more.

The wreck occurred about 9:53 a.m. Thursday on state Route 39 in Yellow Creek Township.

Cynthia L. Pelley, 35, of 10 Summit Drive, was driving a 2007 car east. Amanda Parish, 21, of Hazel Run Road, was driving a car west.

Parish’s vehicle went left of center and struck Pelley’s car head-on, the patrol reported. Pelley’s car then struck a guardrail and came to a rest on top of it.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Two people in Pelley’s car were injured. Shannon E. Rowe, 21, and Shawn M. Wood, 2, both of Market Street, were taken to East Liverpool City Hospital. Rowe was wearing a seat belt and the child was in a safety seat.

The patrol said the investigation is continuing.

Councilman freed

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana Councilman William R. Kimpel was ordered released from the Columbiana County Jail on Wednesday.

On Oct. 22, he began serving a 30-day term for contempt of court for not making payments to his ex-wife as part of their divorce.

The lawyers for both sides agreed to the entry approved by Magistrate Kathleen Bartlett. No terms of an agreement were stated. The case is to be reviewed in December.

Jail sentence stayed

LISBON — Warren Atty. George Kafantaris got a treat for Halloween. The Seventh District Court of Appeals on Wednesday approved his request for a stay on a 20-day contempt sentence in the Columbiana County jail.

Kafantaris had been ordered to report to jail on Halloween evening by county Common Pleas Court Judge C. Ashley Pike.

Judge Pike had found the attorney in contempt twice during proceedings in a murder trial. Kafantaris represented a man who was convicted of stabbing an East Liverpool woman over drugs.

The appeals court noted that the court review process would be meaningless if the attorney served the sentence before the appeals court ruled on the validity of Judge Pike’s order.
