Man crashed after driving 100 mph to avoid police

YOUNGSTOWN — Once released from the hospital, the man accused of driving 100 mph to elude police is expected to be arraigned in municipal court on a charge of failure to comply with a police order.

Roosevelt Cooper III, 30, of Gertrude Avenue was in satisfactory condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police said Cooper sped off from the 300 block of West Marion Avenue around 2 p.m. Tuesday when officers approached to tell him to move his car which was obstructing traffic.

The car was parked near a known drug house, reports show. Cooper eventually crashed as he entered the U.S. Route 422 ramp at the Himrod Avenue expressway. The car struck a concrete median and flipped, landed on its roof and then burst into flames. Cooper crawled from the vehicle and was taken into custody.
