AFTER THE CHASE: A Youngstown firefighter tries to kick in a window on a car after it crashed while exiting the Himrod Expressway to U.S. Route 422 about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The driver, Roosevelt Cooper III, 30, of Youngstown, at left and above on the ground with police, fled after police approached his car on West Marion Avenue to tell him to move it because it was blocking the street. Police chased him through 13 city streets as he reached speeds of more than 100 mph, a police report says. Police said they gave up the pursuit because it was getting too dangerous. From a half-mile away, they watched him try to pass a pickup truck on the single-lane ramp to Route 422. He hit a sign, then a concrete median, then went airborne and flipped several times down a 30-foot embankment. Police pulled him from the burning car. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he remained in stable condition Tuesday night. He is charged with failure to comply with the order of a police officer.
