National Spelling Bee

John Umble, 12, of Poland, had to spell 11 words to win The Vindicator Regional Spelling Bee in March, and there was only one, mattock, with which he wasn’t familiar. The official list for the Scripps National Spelling Bee will likely contain some tougher words. Some from previous bees are:

pecksniffian (highly devout).

demegoric (related to public speaking).

zygodactylous (having toes arranged two in front and two behind).

chrysophilist (lover of gold).

pleurodynia (sharp pain in the side).

lysozyme (a basic protein).

fissiparous (tending to disintegrate).

cabotinage (theatricality).
