Hay’s bat helps Muskies succeed, win OAC tourney


The Muskingum softball team won its 10th straight OAC championship.

Mallory Hay, a freshman starter for the Muskingum College softball team from Boardman High, helped the Muskies to win their 10th straight Ohio Athletic Conference championship to gain a berth in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament.

Hay, an outfielder, socked her fourth homer of the season, a solo shot, to help Muskingum beat Marietta, 4-3, to win the OAC tourney championship to advance into the NCAA Regional hosted by Muskingum in New Concord.

The Muskies eventually lost in the first round of the NCAA Regional to Anderson University, 10-2, on May 12 to be eliminated.

Hay finished the season with a .269 batting average on 36-for-134 with four homers, six doubles, 19 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

She helped the Muskies compile a 36-11 overall record, including 15-3 in the OAC.

While at Boardman, Hay was a four-year letterwinner.

Angelo places in 3 events

MEADVILLE — Freshman Kristen Angelo (Hubbard High) placed in three throwing events to help the Allegheny College women’s track team place second at the North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.

Angelo placed third in the discus (117-5) and hammer (117-3) and fourth in the shot put (35-63⁄4).

Her teammate, Lindsay Svetlak (Lowellville), a senior, placed eighth in the 1,500 in 4:58.72.

Also on the Allegheny roster this year was senior Rashelle Glass (Shenango) in the mid-distance events.

Dobos leads area players

HIRAM — The Hiram College baseball team had five Youngstown-area players on the roster this season, including Craig Dobos of Warren, a Howland High graduate, who was one of the top offensive players.

Dobos, a sophomore outfielder, led the Terriers in RBIs (30), tied for the lead in home runs (2), had the second-highest batting average (.340 on 34-for-100) and was third in doubles (10). He also scored 24 runs.

However, Hiram struggled to a 6-29 record, including 1-14 in the NCAC East.

Dobos, the son of Scott and Peggy Dobos, was selected to the All-NCAC team as an honorable mention, marking the first time that he gained all-loop honors.

He is majoring in middle childhood education.

Also with the Hiram team were Mike Swoboda (Poland), Justin Street (Howland), Anthony Maruca (Champion) and Jarrett Partridge (Maplewood).

Swoboda, a sophomore pitcher, appeared in six games, pitched 121⁄3 innings and struck out 10 batters. He had an 0-4 record and 19.70 earned run average.

The son of Barry and Kathy Swoboda of Poland, Mike is majoring in political science.

Street, a freshman catcher, played in 21 games and was outstanding on defense with a .982 fielding percentage. He had 101 putouts, nine assists and two errors.

The son of Lisa Street of Warren and an education major, Justin batted .176 (9-for-51) with a double, four runs scored and three RBIs.

Maruca, a freshman infielder, played in 18 games and batted .250 (10-for-40) with one double, five runs scored and three RBIs. On defense, he had a .980 fielding percentage with 47 putouts, three assists and one error.

The son of Mike and Deanna Maruca of Warren, Anthony is majoring in sport management.

Partridge, a freshman pitcher and outfielder, played 12 games as an outfielder and pinch hitter and pitched in four games over five innings.

The son of Randy and Andrea Partridge of Cortland and a management major, Jarrett batted .160 (4-for-25), scored one run and had lone RBI. On the mound, he posted a 0-0 record and a 19.80 ERA with one strikeout.
