Boardman tennis
in team tourney

BOARDMAN — The Boardman High tennis team posted 3-2 victory over Shaker Heights in an Ohio Coaches Tennis Association state team tournament.

Boardman advanced to the team finals in Columbus Sunday.

The Spartans’ Bryant Salcedo, at No. singles, defeated Jeremy Polster, 6-0, 6-0; Scott Warden, at No. 2 singles defeated Greg Woyczynski, 6-2, 6-0 and Robert Salcedo defeated Aaron Robbins, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles Shaker Heights’ Robert Williams and Aaron Abelson defeated Brad Franczkowski and Shawn O’Neil, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3; and Niranjan Kumar and Carter Wang defeated Boardman’s Kevin Howells and Ryan Rosati, 6-3, 6-4.

Fitch blanks
Perry, 2-0

MASSILLON — Heidi Soriano and Kara Roche combined to pitch a five-hitter as the Fitch High softball team blanked Perry 2-0 Thursday in a Federal League game.

The Falcons (10-15, 5-9) completed their season winning their last three Federal League contests.

Fitch was held to two hits, but one of those was by Haley Martinelli who singled in the two runs in the fourth inning.

Youth golf
at Lakeside

LAKE MILTON — Lakeside Golf Course will host a league for youth golfers Tuesday mornings from June 19-July 24.

Golfers are required to have their own clubs and prior instruction. Fee is $50. Registration must be completed by June 13 at Lakeside. For more information, call (330) 547-2797.

HARTFORD — The fifth night of FANtastic Five racing is Saturday night at Sharon Speedway, which will feature a pair of bonus features after rain postponed action May 19.

Also, Sharon Speedway will recognize the military on “Hero’s Night.” All current members and veterans of the military will be admitted free.

MERCER, Pa. — Mercer Raceway Park will be the site of “American Thunder Weekend” Saturday and Sunday. There will be racing Saturday and world championship truck and tractor pulling Sunday with a rain date Monday.

Hanshaw to fight
Roy Jones Jr.

NEW YORK — Tony “Tyger” Hanshaw, who was born in Warren and lives in Massillon, will fight Roy Jones Jr. in a light heavyweight bout July 15 in Biloxi, Miss.

Hanshaw said Wednesday at a news conference that he will begin training with Floyd Mayweather Sr., former trainer of Oscar De La Hoya and the estranged father of junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hanshaw, 21-0-1 with 14 knockouts, had been trained by John Russell. But Hanshaw said he will begin working with Mayweather next week, and that “it just wasn’t going to work out” with Russell.

Jones is 50-4 with 38 knockouts.

WEXFORD, Pa. — The Washington & Jefferson men and Westminster women captured the 2006-07 Presidents’ Athletic Conference All-Sports Trophies.

W&J finished with PAC championships in football, baseball and golf.

Westminster won titles in soccer and swimming/diving.

•CORNING, N.Y. — Charlotta Sorenstam shot a bogey-free 8-under 64 on Thursday, matching her career low, to take a one-shot lead over Beth Bader after the first round of the LPGA Corning Classic.
