Water is OK now
AUSTINTOWN — Residents on West Radio Road and Rutland Avenue can stop boiling their water before drinking it or cooking with it. The Youngstown Water Department tested the water after it was shut off for road work in the area for part of the day Wednesday. The shutdown and subsequent boil notice also affected one address on North Niles-Canfield Road and one on North Kimberly Avenue. A waterline on West Rockwell Road will be shut off at 9 a.m. Monday for the same road work, which is the state Route 46 widening project. Water service will be restored at 4 p.m., and residents on West Rockwell should boil their water for cooking and drinking until further notice. 165 and 171 N. Canfield-Niles Road also will be affected.
3 injured in accident
CAMPBELL — A city cruiser responding to a domestic violence call collided with another vehicle, sending the officer and two other people to a hospital. Police wouldn’t released the name of the officer or the two people from the other car who were taken to the hospital. The accident occurred about 6 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Madison Road and Murray Avenue. No further information was available at press time.
‘Dusk to dawn’ effort
The Trumbull County Operating Vehicle Impaired Task Force will operate multiple sobriety checkpoints next week to deter and intercept drinking drivers. The checkpoints will be part of the nationwide “dusk to dawn” enforcement initiative.
Remembrance event
MERCER, Pa. — The Mercer County Vietnam Era Veterans Association is having its 12th annual Remembrance and Reflections Memorial Ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday to honor the county residents who were killed in the Vietnam War or are missing in action. The event will be on the east side of the Mercer County Courthouse next to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This year, the names of those who have died in the war on terrorism will be included. The main speaker is retired Army Col. Gary Solander, director of veterans affairs for Mercer County.
Counterfeit check
BOARDMAN — A counterfeit check for $14,523 was presented to the Cortland Banks branch on South Avenue on Thursday afternoon. A man requested a split-deposit, receiving $4,000 in cash and the remaining amount was deposited, the police report states. The check, which was a certified bank check from Norstar Commercial Bank, was identified as counterfeit when Norstar was contacted to verify account information. The bank does not exist, police were told.
Ceremony at Alden
WARREN — Pupils and staff conducted a ceremony Friday at Alden Elementary, 350 Loveless S.W., which will close at the end of the school year. The event honored Alden’s tradition of academic excellence that began in 1963. The ceremony concluded with a balloon launch from the front lawn. Dawn Marzano, school district spokeswoman, said the board of education has not decided what to do with the building. In the fall, the 250 pupils from Alden will be sent to other schools in the district. A closing ceremony with a picnic will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at McGuffey Elementary, 3465 Tod Ave. N.W., which also is closing. There will be carnival rides, games, food and refreshments at McGuffey, which first opened in 1960. Like Alden, the 430 pupils will be sent to other schools, Marzano said. The school board has not decided what to do with the McGuffey building. Other school buildings closing at the end of the year are Garfield and Laird Avenue elementary schools and Turner Middle School.
Piping, meters stolen
BOARDMAN — Copper piping and water meters were stolen from two houses in Boardman on Wednesday. Both properties are vacant. At a home on Beechwood, a man was seen walking out of the property with two bags, police were told by residents. The front door was kicked in. The copper piping and the water meter were the only items police determined were stolen. The executor of a house on Simon Road reported brass fireplace accessories were stolen, in addition to the other items. Entry was gained through a garage window.
