Mathews captures Div. IV title, 6-0



Maplewood won the Div. III district title beating LaBrae, 3-2.
EASTLAKE -- Senior Amber Jarvis drove in two runs with a double and senior Caitlyn Youngs struck out 12 and allowed just two hits as Mathews claimed the Division IV district championship with a 6-0 win over Southington.
Junior McKenzie Brown had two hits and two RBIs, while sophomore Miranda Tatum also added two hits for the Mustangs (15-6), who will play May 24 at the regional at Kent State. Mathews will play the Dalton-Cuyahoga Heights winner at 5 p.m.
Youngs and her defense quelled threats in the first and fifth innings.
In the first, Southington had runners on second and third with one out, but strikeout and pop up to the catcher ended trouble.
Southington also had the bases loaded in the fifth.
Jessica Sindledecker and B. Niebes had Southington's hits.
Last year, Mathews was a district runnerup, losing to Kirtland, 1-0.
Maplewood 3, LaBrae 2
JEFFERSON -- Cheyenne Thornton hit a two-run home run and Markie Pozzuto struck out 13 as Maplewood won the Div. III district title over LaBrae.
Emily Paris had two hits including a double for the Rockets.
Stepfanie Higgins had two hits and drove in both runs for LaBrae. Lindsey Higgins tossed a five-hitter and struckout nine for the Vikings.
Maplewood will play March 24 at the regional at Genshaft Park in Massillon.
Jackson-Milton 5, St. Thomas 4
CORTLAND -- Back to back singles by Jessica Balent and Krista Kiraly followed by a throwing error enabled Balent to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning in a Div. IV semifinal.
Balent reached second base after Jackson-Milton had two outs and no one on base. Then Kortney Gherardi's grounder went back to pitcher Sam Voss, who made an errant throw to first base for the game's only error.
Gherardi is a senior.
Kiraly (16-6) tossed a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts. The senior finished with four hits and a triple by freshman Cat Keck netted three RBIs in the third inning.
Also for Jackson-Milton (17-8), seniors Balent and Dez Cavanaugh both had three hits, while sophomore Billi Jo Byram had two hits.
Sam Voss and Colleen Harrington had two hits for St. Thomas.
The Bluejays play Western Reserve in the district final today at Lakeview. Jackson-Milton split with Western Reserve in the regular season.
Western Reserve 5, McDonald 0
CORTLAND -- Elizabeth Srock pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 to lead Western Reserve (18-9) into the Div. IV district championship game.
Erika Goddard drove in two runs with a double and Srock added two singles of McDonald's Lauren Walls, who only allowed five hits.
