BOARDMAN -- A man who said he had a gun walked away with more than 150, car wax and candy from a South Avenue discount store. Employees of Family Dollar told police that the man came into the store about 12:30 p.m. Monday, selected the car wax and candy and approached the register. He told an employee to give him the money in the register, saying he had a gun. The employee complied, and the man left the store, getting into a vehicle that traveled north on South Avenue. The car's license plate revealed that it had been reported stolen out of Youngstown. Police later found the car in the parking lot of an East Midlothian Boulevard apartment complex.
Boy shot in thighnear private school
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old boy was shot in the left thigh around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday near Watkins Christian Academy, a private school on East High Avenue, police said. Police and the boy's father were skeptical of his story of what happened after finding a .25-caliber handgun and one live round in the Chevrolet Blazer he was driving. The boy said a man approached the vehicle -- as it traveled 25 mph on East High -- and fired one shot. Police found no bullet hole in the vehicle.
Household hazardouswaste to be collected
CANFIELD -- A household hazardous waste collection will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Canfield Fairgrounds, Gate 9, off state Route 46. Accepted will be pesticides, insecticides, stains, herbicides, greases, varnishes, household cleaners, adhesives, sealants, car batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, propane cylinders, mercury, solvents, gasoline and oil-based paint. No tires or appliances will be accepted. The next hazardous materials collection sponsored by the Mahoning County Recycling Division, also known as the Green Team, will be Oct. 13.
Youngstown fires
YOUNGSTOWN -- A vacant house at 216 E. LaClede Ave. was intentionally set on fire around 11 p.m. Monday, the fire department said. The structure was allowed to burn down; damage was set at 12,000, a total loss. At 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, a garage on fire at 211 E. Dewey Ave. collapsed onto a 1990 Cadillac, which also burned. The cause is under investigation.
Warren woman indictedon robbery charges
WARREN -- Michelle Walp, 20, of Dunstan Drive has been indicted on five counts of aggravated robbery. Police reported Walp, who said she was pregnant, robbed a couple in April after they gave her a ride. She cut the man's hand when he tried to take a knife from her to halt the robbery. A short time later, a man was robbed at knife-point after giving her a ride. She was captured by police on Dietz Road. If convicted, she could be sentenced to as much as 50 years in prison.
City of Canfield buyslot next to Greasel Park
CANFIELD -- The city acquired a lot next to Greasel Park for 67,000, officials said Tuesday. City council president Andrew Skrobola said the 200-by-150-foot lot is at the corner of Callahan Road and Winona Drive. City manager Charles Tieche said the property is next to the park entrance. He said the city is talking about developing it for parking. A house on the property will be demolished.
