Trustees to reconsider moratorium on PUDs

CANFIELD -- A yearlong township moratorium on planned unit developments is almost over, and trustees will consider whether to extend or to lift it.
Trustees expect to talk about the issue at their next meeting at 7 p.m. June 4.
Trustees enacted the moratorium after residents battled with developers over PUDs, which are designed to save land by allowing more housing units to be built on less property.
One PUD proposal in the Westbury Park subdivision off Gibson Road prompted an outcry from residents there, but they eventually came to an undisclosed agreement with the developer and dropped their fight.
Another proposal for a PUD behind homes on South Turner Road was rejected by voters in the November election.
The township zoning commission made changes to the PUD regulations last year, and the trustees approved those changes in January. Changes include capping the size of a PUD to 15 acres, and requiring more green space and deeper setbacks.
Canfield began allowing PUDs in the township in 2004.
