Defective oven door responsible for dull pane

Dear Heloise: I had a new self-cleaning oven installed and didn't get around to cleaning it for more than a year. The first time it was cleaned, it got white streaks between the glass panes on the oven door because it was not sealed properly. The company wouldn't honor the warranty because it was only for one year.
A lesson learned the hard way -- make sure you test out every feature on a new appliance before the warranty expires. Marvin T., via e-mail
Marvin, call the manufacturer and stand your ground! If the oven door is defective, the manufacturer should solve the problem -- it's not your fault. Heloise
Dear Heloise: I like to recycle my used computer/typing paper by cutting it in half and using it for scratch paper. I also put a stack of used paper in my fax machine because we keep getting so many junk faxes! Katherine Serio Butler, Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas
We recycle paper here at Heloise Central, too. We reuse the side without printing. We simply load it back into the printer, but have put a note on the printer about which way the paper should go to prevent printing something over the original item. Heloise
Dear Heloise: As we get older, it is harder to see to thread a needle. Something that helps me is to use the bright-yellow lid of a butter tub.
I hold it as background, and it makes the eye of the needle easier to see. Jean S., Payson, Ariz.
Dear Heloise: I recently bought a used freezer that had an awful cigarette-smoke odor inside. I tried many things. Then my mom remembered an old hint to put an open can of coffee inside for a few days (keep the freezer running). After two days, the smell was gone, and the coffee didn't leave a smell either. Dear Heloise: I remove all empty hangers out of closets every day. I purchased a towel rack and placed it under the shelves above my dryer, and I place the hangers there. That way, I do not have to untangle hangers as I hang up clothes. A Reader, via e-mail
Dear Heloise: Love your daily article in our hometown newspaper. I have a travel hint: I tie yarn, ribbon or string on my luggage, but sometimes it comes off in the handling of my luggage, so I stenciled a bright-pink flower on both sides of my rolling suitcase. Now all I do is look for the bright-pink flower, and it will always be there. Margaret, St. Marys
Dear Heloise: Here is another way to write messages on a mirror: Use a bar of soap. It is cheap, easy to wash off and always at hand. Barbara in Washington, D.C.
