Canfield tops Warren Harding in 7th



Anthony Guerrieri hit a pair of homers in the same inning to power Girard.
WARREN -- The Canfield High boys baseball team won a pitchers' duel against Warren Harding on Thursday, 4-2.
Canfield pitchers Andrew Turocy and Jake Kucek combined to strike out 16 batters and allowed just three hits, while Harding's Tom Popadak had 11 strikeouts and allowed four hits.
Mark Carrocce and John Pitzulo each had an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning as Canfield scored the winning runs.
Carrocce finished with two hits and an RBI while Turocy also had two RBIs.
Chaney 14, Wilson 4
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dustin Guyer and Pat Allen combined to strike out 12 batters for Chaney.
Allen had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in five runs. Justin Bartell had three hits and four RBIs for the Cowboys (1-2, 1-0 Steel Valley Conference).
For Wilson (0-1), Jarvis Tabb had two hits and Luis Charriez tripled.
Ursuline 14, Leetonia 0
STRUTHERS -- Joe Novak allowed three hits and struck out seven over the first three innings.
Jim Mszanski and Kevin Daley pitched an inning apiece in relief in the 4 1/2-inning game. Mszanski fanned two batters for the Irish (2-1).
Junior Ross Revella had three singles and Nick McCartney, a junior, added two hits. Ed Rohan and Todd Finn also doubled for the winners. For Leetonia (1-2), Ryan Gruszecki and Josh Thompson had a double apiece.
Springfield 13, Struthers 2
STRUTHERS -- Springfield scored seven runs in the first inning and rolled past Struthers in a six-inning contest.
Travis Richey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while John Mrasko had two hits including a double with three RBIs to lead the Tigers (4-0).
Ryan Stanko had two doubles and Zach Jones had two singles for Struthers (1-1).
Hubbard 7, Niles 6
NILES -- Tom Jones hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning for the deciding runs.
Corey Hitt hit two doubles to spark the Eagles (1-2), while Bo Slemons and Jones each hit two singles.
The Red Dragons (2-3) were led by Billy Eddy and Anthony Capogreco with two singles apiece.
Girard 15, McDonald 3
GIRARD -- Junior Anthony Guerrieri hit a pair of two-run homers in the same inning as the Indians scored nine runs in the third to top McDonald.
R.J. Trimbur added three hits and four RBIs for Girard (2-1), while Larry Goist had two hits, including a homer, and Joe Danko had two singles.
Paul Logar had a homer for McDonald (1-2) while Mike Thomas had three hits, including a double.
South Range 8, Crestview 5
NORTH LIMA -- Chris Gause went 3-for-4 with a grand slam in the fourth inning and finished with six RBIs to lead the Raiders (1-1).
Shawn Knopp added two hits and freshman Vince Miller pitched five innings, striking out three and walking two while giving up two hits to get his first varsity win. Raiders coach Jim Hanek also earned his first victory.
Crestview is 1-1.
Warren JFK 7, Liberty 6
WARREN -- Senior Josh Swipas scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for JFK (2-0-1).
Swipas was hit by a pitch, then stole second and third before the wild pitch. Junior Brian Guarnieri and senior Scott Difford had two singles apiece for JFK (2-0-1). Swipas also doubled.
Jon Krause had two hits for Liberty (0-2).
Newton Falls 12, Bristol 4
NEWTON FALLS -- The Tigers' (1-0) 14-hit attack produced five runs in the bottom of the second inning and four in the fourth in their opening season victory.
Greg Leigh worked four innings, allowed only one hit and struck out six to pick up the win. The Tigers' Jae Leeworthy hit two doubles, a single, drove in two runs and stole four bases. Todd Medallis and Jared Bryner hit two singles apiece and Dale Settle stole four bases.
Southeast 19, Jackson-Milton 1
RAVENNA -- The Pirates (2-1) scored all their runs in the first three innings, including 13 in the first.
Greg Lemley hit two doubles and a single for the Pirates. Richard Hendrick hit a double, single and drove in three runs, while Alex Blake, Kyle Johnston and Anthony Cianci each had two hits.
Nick McClarren hit a double and Matt Hiblos a pair of singles for the Bluejays (0-2).
West Branch 3, Northwest 0
BELOIT -- Tyler Newhart and Chad Kitzmiller combined to pitch a no-hitter for West Branch (2-0).
Jarrod Harris, Evan Campbell, Jase Uyselt and Trent Woods each had two hits for the Warriors.
