Track and field
INDIANAPOLIS -- YSU's Bethany Anderson was named Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
Anderson, a native of Jamestown, N.Y., joins former All-America runner Kurt Michaelis as the only two Penguins to earn the indoor season's top honor in its five-year history.
& quot;This award is such a credit to Bethany and coach [Shawn] Cobey for all of the hard work, passion and determination they have shown the past three years, & quot; YSU coach Brian Gorby said. & quot;Bethany has been such a great representative of our program both on and off the track. & quot;
Earlier in the year, Anderson was named the Outstanding Field Performer at the Horizon League Championships after sweeping the throwing events for the second straight year. She won the shot put for the third straight year, becoming just the third three-time winner in the event in the league's history.
Prior to the league meet, Anderson became YSU's first female thrower to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships by throwing a school-record distance of 63 feet, 7 inches in the weight throw. She finished the year ranked 26th in Division I.
Baseball
ATHENS -- Dustin Wachter homered twice and Erich Diedrich hit his third home run in the last three games as YSU topped Ohio 14-7 on Tuesday at Bob Wren Stadium.
The win was YSU's fourth straight and ends a 19-game road streak to start the season. The Penguins will look to win their eighth game in the last nine today in their home opener against Malone at 3 p.m. at Cene Park.
Diedrich, who was recently recognized as the Horizon League Player of the Week and was selected to the College Baseball Foundation's National Honor Roll for his offensive prowess last week, wasted little time in continuing his hot streak. The junior designated hitter took the second pitch he saw over the wall in right center for a three-run home run that gave YSU a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Wachter put the Penguins (8-11) up 5-0 three batters later with a two-run bomb to left center for his first career home run.
Lout Gattozzi brought in Anthony Munoz in the second on a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-0 before Marc Krauss hit his first of three home runs in the bottom of the inning to give Ohio its first run.
Wachter homered down the left field line to lead off the third, but Krauss answered with a three-run round tripper in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to three.
YSU then blew the game open with a four-run fourth and three more runs in the fifth that made the score 14-4.
Krauss hit his third home run to lead off the fifth, and the Bobcats scored twice in the seventh for the final tally.
John Koehnlein went 3-for-5 with three runs scored while Diedrich finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Parks added three RBIs, and Munoz had two hits and two RBIs.
YSU starter Eric Marzec earned his first collegiate win, allowing five runs over five innings. Freshman Corey Vukovic also had his best collegiate outing, holding the Bobcats scoreless in 22/3 innings of relief. Matt Schlarb lasted only 11/3 innings and allowed six runs in a losing effort for the Bobcats (9-11).

Indians' Millerto miss 3-4 weeks
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Cleveland Indians reliever Matt Miller will miss 3-4 weeks with a muscle strain in his right forearm.
The 35-year-old right-hander pulled himself out of Saturday's spring training game against Atlanta as a precaution after his arm cramped up. An MRI exam Monday revealed the strain, and Miller likely will begin the season on the disabled list.
Trainer Lonnie Soloff said Tuesday that Miller's injury is not related to his previous right elbow problems, which limited him to 37 appearances over the last two seasons. Miller missed most of last season following surgery.
