Wednesday's Best Bets on TV

"Friday Night Lights" (8 p.m., NBC): Maybe it's time to dump the "best new show" qualifier on "Friday Night Lights" and start referring to it as the best show, period. The series is down to its last three episodes of the season beginning with tonight's installment, which throws some annoying distractions at the Panthers as a big game looms.
"The State of the Ocean's Animals" (8 p.m., PBS): Overfished waters, shrinking ice floes and polluted environments are harming the welfare of marine animals worldwide, according to this special. The program, the 10th installment of the occasional "Journey to Planet Earth" series, is narrated by actor Matt Damon and produced by filmmakers Hal and Marilyn Weiner. The documentary also offers hope, including a look at the efforts of Melbourne Beach, Fla., to save the loggerhead sea turtle from extinction.
"The Boomer Century 1946-2046" (10 p.m., PBS): Hold on, we know what you're thinking. But, no, this is not yet another dewy-eyed production that wallows in nostalgia. Instead, it's a fast-paced and fascinating two-hour documentary that examines how the generation of Americans born between 1946 and 1964 have re-shaped society and will continue to do so in the coming years. Hosted by researcher Dr. Ken Dychtwald, the program features candid and insightful interviews with dozens of prominent boomers and voices of their generation, including filmmakers Oliver Stone and Rob Reiner, civil rights pioneer Julian Bond, author Erica Jong, futurist Alvin Toffler, playwright Eve Ensler, White House press secretary Tony Snow, political analyst David Gergen and many others.
