WILLIAM HOLMES MCGUFFEY Schoolmaster to America
Born near Claysville, Pa., in 1800.
Raised in Coitsville Township from age 2 to 17.
McGuffey Road was created as a path by his father so William could walk to a parson's school on Wick Avenue.
Attended Washington College in Pennsylvania.
1826-36: Professor at Miami University of Ohio where he penned his first Eclectic Readers. More than 122 million copies printed.
Believed that people improved their lives through education and that women should be educated as well as men.
Believed that nature should be respected and preserved.
Advocated fair treatment of American Indians.
1829: Ordained as a Presbyterian Church minister.
1836-39: President of Cincinnati College.
1839-43: President of Ohio University.
1843-45: President of Woodward College.
1845-73: Professor of philosophy at the University of Virginia.
1873: Died and buried in the University of Virginia burial ground in Charlottesville.
1966: National historical marker placed at family homestead in Coitsville Township.
