Police chase
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police charged a Campbell man with various crimes after a high-speed chase early Monday. Officers spotted Tim Vari, 54, of Sixth Street driving a stolen car shortly past midnight and attempted to stop the vehicle. Vari, a police report says, sped off and led police on a short chase until the engine stopped.
Vari was able to start the car again and rammed two police cars in an attempt to get away before the engine gave out again, the report says. Vari disregarded police orders to exit the vehicle and at one point officers saw him get in the back seat and begin smoking crack cocaine. Police broke the glass and removed him from the car.
Vari was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and treated for the shattered glass on him and the crack cocaine in his system, the report said. He is charged with two counts of receiving stolen property, two counts of felonious assault, fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine and driving under suspension.
Woman attacked
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police charged a man with aggravated robbery after a woman reported being attacked early Monday. A police report says the woman told officers she was leaving a friend's house near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about 1:30 a.m. when Vance Washington, 38, of Griffith Street grabbed her from behind and demanded money.
The woman told police Washington beat her about the head, then slammed her head into a building before taking 10 from her hand.
Reports show that the woman stabbed her attacker in the head and ear with a pocket knife. Police found Washington a short distance from the site of the attack with wounds to his head and ear, the report says.
