Indians 4, Devil Rays 3
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Jeremy Sowers, Cleveland's No. 3 starter, allowed one run over six innings. He gave up five hits, struck out four and walked one in 74 pitches. "I would have liked better first-pitch command, but I was able to locate my fastball and changeup and, at times, my slider," said Sowers, scheduled to follow C.C. Sabathia and Jake Westbrook when the season opens next week. The only run off Sowers came on a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning by Elijah Dukes, who was 2-for-3. James Shields, the Devil Rays No. 3 starter, gave up four runs, three earned, over seven innings. Jorge Cantu hit a two-run home run off Roberto Hernandez in the eighth inning for Tampa Bay. Victor Martinez singled, doubled and drove in a run for Cleveland. Kelly Shoppach drove in a run with one of his two hits. Mike Rouse's RBI single off Shields came one batter after B.J. Upton dropped Andy Marte's popup behind second base. Indians closer Joe Borowski allowed a leadoff single by Brendan Harris in the ninth, but retired the next three batters to earn his first save of the spring.
Blue Jays 2, Pirates 2, 10 innings
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Starting pitchers Josh Towers of Toronto and Paul Maholm allowed no earned runs between them. Adam LaRoche had one of the Pirates' five hits, a double that improved his spring average to .310. Towers, in line to be Toronto's No. 5 starter, allowed an unearned run in six innings, striking out five and walking one. Maholm, a left-hander already set in Pittsburgh's rotation, gave up three hits and two runs in six innings, both unearned, striking out four and walking two. Ryan Doumit tied it for the Pirates in the ninth with a solo homer off Brian Tallet. Pirates reliever Masumi Kuwata, formerly one of Japan's top pitchers, sprained his right ankle running into home plate umpire Wally Bell during the eighth inning. The 5-foot-10, 187-pound Kuwata was racing from the mound to back up third base on John McDonald's single and apparently never saw the 6-foot-3, 260-pound Bell.
