East Liverpool asbestos cleanup begins
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on Monday began cleaning up asbestos at a house at 233 W. Ninth St.
Michael Settles, an OEPA spokesperson, said the amount of asbestos found in the structure was significant.
"It's the worst case of asbestos handling we've seen," Settles said.
There is 1 to 2 feet of asbestos on the floor of the basement.
The material was disturbed by vandals who were trying to remove pipes from the structure; they had removed asbestos coatings from the pipes. Authorities found the debris in January and called the OEPA.
Settles did not know how long it will take to clean the site.
A plastic walkway will be built to safely move material from the house to a disposal bin.
