Sciortino's law degree qualifies him to be auditor
EDITOR:
In his March 11 column, Bert DeSouza criticized both Lisa Antonini and Michael Sciortino and accused Mahoning Democrats of selecting unqualified people to fill public office.
DeSouza states that former auditor George Tablack is a CPA with an appropriate college education, but does not tell us what Mr. Tablack's education is. That leads me to believe that he didn't bother to do the research to find out if Mr. Tablack had any advanced degrees. De Souza implies that Mr. Sciortino, by contrast does not have the proper education to be auditor. De Souza tells us that Mr. Sciortino holds a masters degree in public administration and a juris doctore. De Souza refers to the JD as a & quot;wall adornment. & quot; It is actually a doctor of laws degree. Mr. Sciortino has also been admitted to practice law by the Ohio Supreme Court and is a licensed attorney. De Souza didn't mention that, but then, perhaps he doesn't think that it is as significant.
In order to achieve this status, a person must attend law school for three years full time, or if you are employed during the day, for four years, three nights a week. In Mr. Sciortino's case, it means driving to Akron Law School after you have finished your day's work and taking your law classes. Weekends and off nights are spent preparing for your next class session. This requires hard work, perseverance, and tens of thousands of dollars in tuition payments. It means that the law student sacrifices time with family and any semblance of a social life. The work load is incredible, and it is designed to grind the student down.
Even after a law student survives years of law school and receives his or her degree, they must then undergo a rigorous background examination by the state of Ohio to determine if they have the fitness and character to even take the bar exam.
I know what Mike Sciortino went through to get his "wall ornament & quot; because he and I attended Akron Law School at the same time. I also have a "wall ornament & quot;.
DeSouza demeans every attorney at law who has undertaken to complete this advanced degree and to be admitted to the practice.
