Hundreds offer condolences for fallen soldier

FOWLER — Although attending the calling hours of Army Sgt. Robert Carr, killed March 13 in Iraq, brought back terrible memories of the death of her son, who also died in that conflict, Renee Daniels felt she had to pay her respects to the Carr family.

Daniels of Warren was among hundreds of people — family, friends, neighbors and complete strangers — to stand and wait to offer their condolences Sunday to the Carr family.

Calling hours for Carr at the Believers Christian Fellowship Church on Schenley Avenue Northeast in Warren started at 4 p.m., but there was already a lengthy line an hour before the church’s west entrance opened.

Carr, 22, was killed when a bomb exploded beneath the armored vehicle he was driving in Iraq.

Carr was expected home on leave to celebrate his April 10 wedding anniversary with his wife, Nina, and the pair planned a big family event to renew the vows.

“He was supposed to be here in just a few weeks,” said Don Stevens of Champion, a cousin of Carr’s father, Jeffrey. Nina lives with Jeffrey and Jeffrey’s wife, Cathy, in Fowler.
