Grandparents hop states to see grandkids born

DEFIANCE, Ohio (AP) -- Craig and Gayle Rutter managed to make it into the delivery rooms to see their grandchildren born on the same day, but it wasn't easy.
Their two daughters gave birth just two hours and 20 minutes apart in different states.
"I don't know if anyone would believe it if they read that script," Craig Rutter said. "This stuff just doesn't happen. I mean, come on!"
Both daughters were expecting to give birth near the end of March, but the babies came a couple of weeks early, so the same-day deliveries were far from expected.
"Even before this all happened we thought it was pretty neat they were both expecting about the same time, since their birthdays are just one day apart," Rutter said.
The Rutters went to Defiance Regional Medical Center on March 14 after their younger daughter, Brooke McCarrier, went into labor that morning.
A few hours later, they got a call that their older daughter Heidi Lacey was having contractions and on her way to Dupont Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. -- 50 miles southwest of Defiance.
"Since we thought it might be awhile for Brooke to deliver, we headed to Fort Wayne," Rutter said.
They arrived to see the birth of their fourth grandchild, Piper Lacey, at 4:18 p.m. and then hopped back in the car.
With little time to spare, they got to the Defiance hospital at 5:50 p.m. and saw their fifth grandchild, Lacey McCarrier, born at 6:30 p.m.
"When we returned home that night and reflected on what happened, we just looked at each other and smiled," Gayle Rutter said. "It was a full day, but a very memorable day. Everything went perfectly."
