Five counties represented at District 13-D convention
LIBERTY -- Members of Lions Clubs in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Stark and Portage counties that comprise District 13-D were represented at the 41st annual district convention held recently at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex Centre.
The event began March 9 with a '50's oldies theme in the grand ballroom and entertainment by Gary Morton, magician, and culminated March 11 with the election of Carl Leonhardt of Massillon Lions Club as district governor.
Selected as his associate officers were:
Harold Ullman of Crestwood, vice district governor.
Don Heldman of East Liverpool, deputy district governor.
David Rice of Sebring, state finance and planning.
Tom Kirkbride of Lisbon, Ohio Lions Foundation trustee.
Jeff Eacona of Warren, Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation.
The new officers will assume their posts on July 1. Ted Filmer of Canfield is the current district governor.
Business transacted
March 10 was devoted to business sessions and forums, and a luncheon for Lions members and their wives was held. The speaker was Vince Bevacqua of WYTV-Channel 33, and entertainment was presented by Lee Alverson, "The Piano Man."
There was a necrology service March 11 and a grand banquet was attended by special guests. The speaker was International Director Roy Barnette of Columbia, S.C., who was accompanied by his wife, Lion Barbara Barnette
Awards were presented, and a report on the Parade of Checks revealed that local Lions club raised thousands of dollars for service projects.
Among the dignitaries attending were Floyd Newberry, Ohio past international director; his wife, Elaine Newberry, vice district governor; and Sam Milliken of Pennsylvania, past international director.
Serving as co-chairmen for the convention were past district governors Bud Jenkins of Boardman Lions Cub and Bob Booher of Canal Fulton.
