Attempt to break buffet record set at Amish flea market

MILLERSBURG, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio's Amish community is aiming to make sure the world's record for the biggest buffet doesn't stay in Las Vegas.
Restaurants, bakeries and family cooks in the Amish region concentrated in Holmes County in northeast Ohio plan to challenge the record of 510 buffet dishes served last year at the Las Vegas Hilton.
Organizers of today's event at the Amish Flea Market will have three two-hour sittings for 1,000 people each at 11 apiece. Proceeds will benefit a food pantry for the needy.
Some of the less-familiar recipes among the nearly 600 promised include Hungarian sauerkraut soup and corn casserole, along with garlic mashed potatoes and sweet potato souffle.
Photos of the spread and eyewitness statements will be sent to Guinness World Records officials as part of the record claim, according to Kurt Kleidon, who is helping organize the event.
"We might not have glitz and glamour, but we know how to cook," he said.
