Softball at Miami (Ohio) tournament
OXFORD -- After two weeks off, the Youngstown State softball team returns to action for five games in three days at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational, today through Sunday.
Today, the Penguins play Purdue at 10 a.m. and Toledo at noon. Saturday, YSU plays Michigan State at 2 p.m. and Miami (Ohio) at 4 p.m.
Sunday, the Penguins play Miami (Ohio) at noon.
YSU sports a 3-1 record.
Football teamsets lifting records
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State football team hit the weight room hard during winter conditioning. Nine players established 10 position lifting records.
Quarterback Tom Zetts, defensive back Lenny Wicks, safety Bob Perez, defensive tackle Greg Jacobs, offensive linemen Josh Tanner and Tyler Booth, tailback Jabari Scott, fullback Charlie Gresham and tight end Louis Irizarry all set records.
Seventy-nine players went through testing on five physical skills -- bench press, back squat, clean, vertical jump and three-lift total. Out of 382 possible lifts, the individuals established 280 personal records.
The Penguins begin spring practice March 29 at Stambaugh Stadium.
"Run With ThePenguins" Sunday
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 12th First Place Bank "Run With The Penguins," hosted by the YSU track and field program, is Sunday.
The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and features a 5K course from Beeghly Center to Crandall Park and concludes on the 50-yard line of Stambaugh Stadium.
Entry fee is 10 (pre-race day) and 12 (day of race).

Meeting change
BOARDMAN -- Due to ongoing construction at the Fitch High track, the Greater Youngstown Track Officials Association meeting scheduled for March 25 has been moved to the Boardman High track.
All-star gamesat Boardman gym
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning Valley Coaches Association all-star basketball games will be held March 28 at the Boardman High gym.
The girls game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the boys contest about 8.
There also will be a 3-point shooting contest for both the girls and boys, and a slam dunk contest for the boys.
Tickets will be available at the door.
Correction
The Boardman High girls 4x200 meter relay qualified to the state indoor track and field championships last weekend at the University of Akron.
Members of the relay were seniors Maria Mooney, Becca Sammartino, Danielle Burin, and Breanne Romeo. They ran 1 minute, 49.64 seconds, their best time of the season, to place 11th in the meet.
Fitch HOF meeting
AUSTINTOWN -- The second public information meeting for the Austintown Fitch High School Athletic Hall of Fame is March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Fitch High cafeteria.
Several nomination, selection process and banquet committees will be formed. Community members, alumni, current students and staff members are encouraged to attend.

Thunder in benefit
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning Valley Thunder, along with Second Harvest Food Bank, will hold a public practice March 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the Chevrolet Centre.
Admission to the event requires at least one non-perishable canned food item per person or a 1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank.
Donations should be dropped off at the Sweeney Chevrolet Entrance (Main Box Office Entrance) facing Front Street.
Champion movesbaseball games
CHAMPION -- Champion High will play its varsity and junior varsity baseball games at Packard Park in Warren until further notice.
The field at champion is under construction.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Tri-T Baseball League officers for the 2007 season are President Jim DeChellis, vice president Jim Vrabel, secretary Bob Richards, treasurer Richard Burden and directors Al Dechellis, Eric Doan, Terry Dobson, Brett Fine, Brian Gorup, Dave Matz, Dennis Reardon, Jim Serich, Dave Stryffeler and Gary Williams.

*CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Heidelberg College's Dan Simpson, a Leetonia High graduate, set a school record of 15 minutes, 3.17 seconds, as he placed eighth in the Charlotte 49er Classic.
*HOWLAND -- Melissa Kohn, a senior at Howland High School, has signed a national letter of intent to continue her soccer career at Malone College.
A 5-foot-4 forward, she was a four-year letterwinner for the Tigers and a first team All MAC and All County in 2006.
