Poland vs. Upper Sandusky
Attendance: The Dayton Dunbar-Columbus DeSales game Thursday at 5:15 p.m. had 13,061 fans. The figure for the Poland-Upper Sandusky game at 8:30 p.m. was 15,985. Two of the fans in attendance for the first game were Clark Kellogg (whose two sons, Alex and Nick player for DeSales) and two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin. Kellogg was not originally expected to attend Thursday's game since he is a commentator for CBS during the NCAA Tournament. The state record for a state tournament game was 18,541, set in 2003 when Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary beat Kettering Archbishop Alter in the final. It was LeBron James' final high school basketball game.Protection: Upper Sandusky's Jon Diebler did not wear protective headgear Thursday despite suffering a broken nose in last weekend's regional final victory win over Olmsted Falls. Diebler re-injured his left knee in the first half of Thursday's game and was visibly limping at one point in the second quarter. He originally injured the knee in the opening round of the tournament three weeks ago. Although the knee has some swelling below the kneecap, he's expected to start Saturday. "At this point in the season, you've got to lace them up and go," said Upper Sandusky coach Keith Diebler, Jon's father. Added Jon, "I'll be fine."They saw the sign: Much like LeBron James five years ago, Upper Sandusky senior Jon Diebler was, ahem, serenaded by the Poland student section while warming up before the game. When he sat down, a few young kids walked up to get their pictures taken with him and get an autograph. Poland seniors Jason Butcher and Paul Ciarniello decided to do the same. (Earning cheers from their classmates.) Butcher, wearing a blue "Poland Football Mom" T-shirt, had Diebler sign on the shirt's white lettering, while Ciarniello got his autograph on the arm. "He didn't say much," Butcher said. "He said he was kind of scared." For the record, Diebler did not say that. (But he did laugh.)Up next: The Rams will play Dayton Dunbar (23-4) for the Division II state title Saturday at 2 p.m. Dunbar is making its third straight state tournament appearance, winning the state title last season. Upper Sandusky won a state title in 2005 in its only other state tournament appearance. Diebler's older brother, Jacob, was a member of the 2005 team. Jacob Diebler now plays at Valparaiso. Jon Diebler warmed up for Thursday's game wearing a Valpo T-shirt.Fouls galore: Poland finished with 22 personal fouls, with Lou Coppola, Ben Umbel and Chris Lovell fouling out. Starters Anthony DeFelice and Charlie Carchedi had three each. Carchedi scored seven points.
