Penguinsoutslugged, 12-7
KENT -- The Kent State baseball team scored six straight runs early to outslug Youngstown State in a 12-7 victory on Wednesday in YSU's final game before opening Horizon League play this weekend.
The Golden Flashes turned a one-run deficit into a five-run lead thanks to two-run homers in the third and fourth innings and never looked back.
YSU's loss snapped a three-game winning streak while Kent State improved to 6-12.
Josh Page had two hits and two RBIs while John Koehnlein and Lou Gattozzi added two hits apiece to lead the Penguins. Andrew Davis had four hits and four RBIs to lead the Golden Flashes.
After Kent State got a run in the first, Page and Dustin Wachter had back-to-back RBI hits to put the Penguins up 2-1.
The Golden Flashes regained the lead with four runs in the third on Andrew Davis' two-run single and Anthony Gallas' two-run home run. Davis then hit a two-run homer in the fourth to increase the KSU lead to 7-2.
YSU got within three at 9-6 after RBI singles from Erich Diedrich and Tom Clayton, but Kent State got three runs in the seventh to go up 12-6. Koehnlein doubled home Rayce Robinson in the eighth for the final tally.
Starter Eric Marzec allowed seven runs on eight hits in four innings to suffer his first loss of the season for YSU while Alan Morrison earned his first win for Kent State.
The Penguins will begin a three-game series at Butler on Friday at 3 p.m.

RiverKingscoach honored
Memphis RiverKings Head Coach Kevin McClelland has been selected as the recipient of the 2006-07 Central Hockey League Coach of the Year award following balloting among all CHL coaches.
The award is presented annually to the CHL coach judged to have contributed most to his team's success.
In his second year with the club, McClelland has orchestrated a dramatic turnaround for the playoff-bound RiverKings, 22 games above .500 (38-16-6) with four games remaining in the regular season.
McClelland played 14 seasons and 588 games in the National Hockey League, winning four Stanley Cup Championships with the Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the mid to late '80s.
Prior to joining the RiverKings behind the bench last season, McClelland was the head coach at the junior level in the Western Hockey League for two seasons.
Finishing second was Ken McRae of the Corpus Christi Rayz, who have secured their first playoff appearance since the 2000-01 season.
Boardman's Greco makes list
HOUSTON -- Toledo offensive lineman John Greco, a Boardman High graduate, and West Virginia defensive lineman Keilen Dykes, a Chaney High graduate, was named to the preliminary watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award.
Greco (6-5, 318) is one of 43 preliminary candidates for the award, which honors college football's best lineman. He also made the watch list before last season. Dykes (6-5, 295) is a three-year starter for the Mountaineers.
This year's winner will be announced on Dec. 5.
Correction
Joe Montana graduated from Monongahela (Pa.) High School in 1974, not 1972. A story in Wednesday's edition contained the wrong year.
Westminsterhires Coy
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College has hired Scott Coy to the athletics staff. Coy will serve on the football coaching staff as offensive line coach and special teams coordinator.
As a full-time staffer, Coy also will serve as Westminster's assistant track and field coach and a physical education instructor.
"Coach Coy brings a wealth of success as player and a coach to our rich history at Westminster College," Westminster football coach Jeff Hand said. "Scott is eager to begin and we are excited about what he brings to the Titan football program, the athletic department and the Westminster campus community."
Coy, 27, comes to Westminster from NCAA Division I Northern Illinois Univ. where he worked on the football staff as a graduate assistant.
As a player, Coy was a two-year letterman and starting offensive lineman on Mount Union's 2001 national championship team.

Upshaw re-elected
WAILEA, Hawaii -- Gene Upshaw was re-elected Wednesday for his ninth consecutive three-year term as executive director of the NFL Players Association.
The 62-member board of player representatives, meeting here, voted unanimously to re-elect the former guard for the Raiders, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Upshaw, 61, was first elected to the position in 1982, immediately after his career ended.
