SteelHounds' postseason opponent still up in the air
Jeff Christian and Chris Richards were named to the All-CHL team.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Even though they have just three remaining games before the Central Hockey League's regular season ends, the Youngstown SteelHounds still don't know whom they will play in the first round of the playoffs.
Heading into tonight's action, the SteelHounds (32-19-10) are tied for the Northern Conference's fourth seed with Oklahoma City (33-20-8).
Both teams have 74 points. If the season ended today, the Blazers own the tiebreaker edge (most victories).
The fourth seed will play the third-seeded Memphis RiverKings (38-17-6) in the opening round of the playoffs which begin next week.
The fifth seed will play the conference's second seed -- either the Colorado Eagles (44-16-1, 89 points) or Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (41-14-6, 88 points).
The sixth seed either will be the Tulsa Oilers (27-26-8, 62 points) or Wichita Thunder (27-27-7, 61 points).
Oklahoma City plays Memphis tonight, then closes the season with a home-and-home series with Wichita.
Open road trip Friday
The SteelHounds start their road trip with a game against the RiverKings on Friday at 8 p.m.
The SteelHounds close the season in Tulsa on Saturday (8:30 p.m.) and in Bossier-Shreveport on Sunday (5 p.m.)
After that, Coach Kevin Kaminski says the SteelHounds will travel from Memphis to the home of their first-round opponent.
Youngstown's first two games of the best-of-seven series will be on the road, followed by three games at the Chevrolet Centre. The home playoff dates are April 4, April 6 and (if necessary) April 7.
All-CHL
Wednesday, forwards Jeff Christian and Chris Richards were named to the 2006-07 All-CHL Team.
The "Veteran Connection" rank one-two in total points, assists and plus/minus with Richards also ranking second in goals scored.
Christian leads the league in assists with 73, points with 109 and plus/minus at plus 43.
Richards is second with 66 assists, 105 points and a plus 37 rating. A former Ohio State Buckeye, Richards also has 39 goals, one back of the Arizona Sundogs' Brent Kelly.
"Well deserved," Kaminski said. "These two guys come to work everyday and they really have fun playing the game. It shows every time they hit the ice."
Two MVP candidates
Christian and Richards also named finalists for the CHL Most Valuable Player which will be announced on Monday.
"They do all the little things and have all the intangibles, that is why they are battling for MVP and the points race and that is why they made ALL CHL," Kaminski said.
When the SteelHounds have been hot, it usually has been when multiple players start scoring streaks.
At the moment, Stephen Margeson and Mark Odut have four-game point streaks.
Odut is in his first season as a SteelHound but spent two years with Kaminski when they were in Missouri with the defunct Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League.
Odut has an assist in each of his last four games bringing him up to 15 assists to go with six goals for 21 points in 42 games.
For Margeson, the former Memphis RiverKing defenseman is having a breakout year as he has three goals and an assist in his last four games. So far, the Banff, Alberta, native has 16 goals and 21 assists for 37 points to go with his plus 20 rating.
