Area runnerscompete in 8K
NEW YORK -- Youngstown Road Runners Club members David Gramlich and Matt Folk turned in outstanding performances at the USATF 8k Championships held in Central Park.
The course was run on the 8k loop in Central Park that the Olympic Trials Marathon will be run on in November.
Gramlich, of Boardman, finished in 24th place with a time of 23 minutes, 54 seconds, while Folk, of Canfield, finished in 30th place with a time of 24:17.
Also, Leo Korminick finished 27th (24:08) and Nick Cordes finished in 24:17.
Richardson winsby decision
AKRON -- Durrell Richardson of Youngstown and the Downtown Boxing Club won a four-round decision over Daniel Hicks of Lansing, Mich., to remain undefeated as part of a seven-fight card at Tangiers Restaurant Saturday.
Richardson (8-0, 4 KOs), trained by Tom Cordell, made a successful return to the ring after about a six-month hiatus. Richardson knocked down Hicks (3-2, 2 KOs) in the first round.
Also on the card was Tom Joseph of Girard and the Downtown Boxing Club, who lost a four-round decision to John Lipscomb (2-9) of Cleveland.
Joseph, trained by Larry Filer, was making his pro debut
Joseph suffered a cut over his left eye in the middle of the third round, and fought a defensive game in the fourth round.
Westminster-Genevagame change
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College's home baseball game against Geneva, originally scheduled for last Friday, has been rescheduled for April 10 at 4 p.m.
ONN to telecaststate tournament
COLUMBUS -- The four boys basketball state finals games will be televised live by ONN.
Also ONN will telecast on tape delay the Division I semifinal games, starting at 8:30 p.m.
Saturday's games are scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. (Division III), 2 p.m. (Div. II), 5:15 p.m. (Div. IV) and 8:30 p.m. (Div. I).
SteelHounds'fundraiser
YOUNGSTOWN -- Members of the Youngstown SteelHounds will serve as celebrity bartenders today from 6-9 p.m. at the Draught House, 219 Federal Street, Youngstown. Money raised will benefit the Jeff Christian Charitable Foundation.
Thiel athletes named
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel's Amanda Bruce, Chavonne Green and Alex Eaton were named Presidents' Athletic Conference track and field athletes of the week.
Bruce, the women's field athlete of the week, won the pole vault at the Roanoke Maroon Invitational (7 feet, 117/10 inches).
Green, the women's track athlete of the week, finished second in the triple jump (33-01/10), tied for fifth in the long jump (15-62/10), seventh in the 100-meter dash (13.72 seconds) and was a member of the third-place 4x100-meter relay (51.85).
Eaton, the men's track athlete of the week, was second in the 200 (23.04), third in the 400 (51.00) and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay (3:30.78) and second-place 1600 sprint medley relay (3:42.93).
Ex-Phantom Meyer lands rookie honor
BOARDMAN -- Freshman center Owen Meyer of the U.S. Military Academy and a former member of the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, was named to the Atlantic Hockey Association's All-Rookie Team.
Meyer, a native of Littleton, Colo., finished fourth on the Cadets in scoring, third among AHA rookies and 21st among freshmen in the nation with 26 points on 12 goals and 14 assists. He was twice named the AHA rookie of the week. Army finished with a record of 17-12-5.

Pittsburgh mayor wants NHL 'Star Game
PITTSBURGH -- Workers haven't even started moving dirt for the Pittsburgh Penguins new arena, but mayor Luke Ravenstahl already has an idea for one event he would like to see there: the NHL All-Star Game.
Ravenstahl said Monday that he has already talked to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman about possibly hosting the game in 2011 or 2012.

Brawl, gunfire atprep game in NYC
NEW YORK -- Teenagers brawled in the stands at a high school basketball game at Madison Square Garden Sunday night before police cracked down on the melee, which spilled into the streets.
The Public Schools Athletic League's AA division city championship high school basketball game was between Brooklyn rivals Lincoln and Boys & amp; Girls.
The fights started in the third quarter, distracting and displacing many in the crowd of thousands, the New York Times reported Monday. Lincoln won 77-50.
Gunfire was heard as the crowd went from the arena to Times Square, police said. No injuries were reported. Twenty-one people, mostly teenagers, were arrested, police said. Some were charged with disorderly conduct or resisting arrest and one was arrested on a riot charge.
