Guilty plea in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man who shot a taxi driver in January 2005 and pleaded guilty Monday to attempted murder and aggravated robbery faces 11 to 38 years in prison when he is sentenced at 9:30 a.m. today by Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Hubert Floyd Jr., 43, of Bennington Avenue, pleaded guilty as charged on the day his trial was to begin. Each charge carries a firearm specification, and Floyd also pleaded guilty to a repeat violent offender specification and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was charged with shooting Julio Rivera, 37, of Early Road, an Independent Taxi driver, in the neck on the city's East Side. Rivera, who survived had picked up Floyd as a passenger, and Floyd shot Rivera in a robbery attempt, police said.
Support-case sentence
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man who has accumulated a 51,240 child-support debt for his two children over a 17-year period has been sentenced to a year in prison. Daniel Eynon, 58, of Youngstown, drew the sentence Friday from Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Judge Krichbaum had put Eynon on five years' probation in February 2005 for nonpayment of child support, but issued a warrant for his arrest last year when he failed to pay support and report to his probation officer, and that resulted in Eynon's arrest in a traffic stop last Dec. 18. Eynon's son is 19, and his daughter is 18, but Edward S. DeAngelo, the assistant county prosecutor who handled the case, said the support obligation remains active even after one's children reach adulthood.

AUSTINTOWN -- A man was shocked with a stun gun when officers confronted him after a car chase, police said.
Willis M. Smith III, 34, of North Osborne Avenue is free on a summons after his arraignment Monday on a charge of fleeing and eluding, according to court records.
Smith fled when an officer tried to stop him Saturday around 3 a.m. after he reportedly made a U-turn. The pursuit continued for more than two miles, reaching speeds as high as 80. The officer was told to stop the chase because the roads were icy, the report says.
Officers later spotted Smith walking through backyards to his porch, the report says. He wouldn't surrender. He came toward one of the officers who then stunned him, the report says. He was also charged with failure to comply and having an expired license. He was taken to Mahoning County Jail to await his court appearance.
