KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Chuck James overcame control problems to throw five scoreless innings, lowering his spring ERA to 2.57. James gave up four hits but walked three. He loaded the bases in the second with two walks after Casey Blake's double, then pitched out of the jam. Scott Thorman, who takes over this year at first base following the trade of Adam LaRoche, hit his first homer and drove in three runs. Cleveland starter Adam Miller allowed three hits and one walk in five scoreless inning. He has given up eight hits in 14 scoreless innings over three starts.
Pirates 5, Phillies 1
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Ian Snell was sharp, tossing five scoreless innings for the Pirates. Ronny Paulino drove in two runs with a pair of hits. Snell allowed four hits, struck out five and walked two. He hasn't allowed a run in his last three appearances, spanning 11 innings. Snell is slated to be Pittsburgh's No. 2 starter behind Zach Duke. The 25-year-old right-hander was 14-11 with a 4.74 ERA last year. Paulino drove in runs with a single in the first inning and a double in the third. Don Kelly added an RBI double. Adam Eaton allowed three runs and eight hits against the Pirates, raising his ERA to 4.63 this spring. Brennan King's RBI single in the eighth against Dan Kolb spoiled the shutout.
