Shot-putter Blewitt
8th at Championships

INDIANAPOLIS — Boardman High graduate Adriane Blewitt finished eighth in the shot put at the U.S. National Championships last Sunday.

Blewitt, who was a shotputter at Ashland University, had a toss of 55 feet 10 1/4 inches.

The top three finishers were: Kristen Heaston representing Nike, 61-5 3/4; Jillian Camarena representing New York Athletic Club, 60-8 1/2; and Sarah Steven of Arizona State, 59-1 1/2.

According to Denise Gorski (Blewitt’s high school coach), the top eight were given three more throws in the finals. The top three will represent the U.S. at the World Championships in Japan in August.

Blewitt is training for the U.S. Olympic Trials that will be in Eugene, Ore., in June 2008.

DeBartolo fund-raiser

BOARDMAN — The annual Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. Memorial Foundation’s fundraiser got under way Thursday with a banquet at the Holiday Inn.

Today, the fund-raiser continues with a huge golf outing at Youngstown Country Club. Members of the San Francisco 49ers will participate.

The two events raise funds for scholarships. Last month, the DeBartolo Foundation awarded $40,000 in scholarships to Mahoning Valley students.

Coverage of the outing will appear in Saturday’s edition.

Pavlik and Fireworks

PULASKI, Pa. — Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik Children’s Day will be Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at Fasline’s Rainbow Fireworks located on Route 422, 1 mile past the Ohio-Pennsylvania state line.

Pavlik will be on hand to greet children, sign autographs and take photographs. Visitors are asked to bring their cameras.

‘Boo’ Timko winner

NEWBURY — Bruce ‘Boo’ Timko of Girard took first place in the boys 14-15 division as he shot 37-37—74 in the North Coast Junior Tournament Thursday at Punderson golf course.

Timko will be a freshman at Warren JFK this fall.

Warren ‘AA’ League

WARREN — Mike Swoboda scattered six hits with 11 strikeouts in leading Callahan’s Irish Pub to a 7-2 victory over Girard Hardware in Warren Class AA League at Packard Park.

Irish Pub, which took advantage of seven walks and three errors, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and Girard Hardware couldn’t recover.

Joe Cvengros hit two singles, stole two bases and drove in a run for Girard Hardware.

FANtastic Five
slated at Sharon

HARTFORD — The FANtastic Five Divisions will take to the Sharon Speedway 3/8-mile dirt oval for the ninth time on Saturday night when racing commences at 6 p.m.

MERCER, Pa. — Mercer Raceway Park will look to complete it’s fourth straight program on Saturday night for “Welcome Ohio Night” presented by Waffle House. A complete program will be on the racing card at 7 p.m.

The track is located off Route 19 on Fairground Road.

Champion’s Ghindia
to attend Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa — 2007 Champion High School graduate Elizabeth Ghindia has recently announced her intention to continue her education at Thiel College.

Ghindia also plans to compete as a member of the Tomcat women's basketball program under fourth-year head coach Artina Trader.

Ghindia, daughter of Eugene and Debbie Ghindia will major in pre-medicine.

DeMay named
women's soccer coach

FORT WAYNE, In. - Former YSU and high school coach Joe DeMay was named assistant women’s soccer coach at Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne.

DeMay served for two years as a women's assistant and goalkeeper coach at YSU. Most recently he served at Cardinal Mooney High School.

He also holds a USSF ‘B’ License and a USSF National Youth License.
