Natural gas leak found

WEST POINT — The West Point Fire Department closed two roads Monday after natural gas was discovered leaking at dangerous levels from a culvert pipe. County Airport Road and Y and O Road in this Columbiana County hamlet were closed around 6:20 p.m. after the fire department tested the gas levels, said Assistant Chief John Barrett. He expected the roads to remain closed until the gas company could shut the gas off. Barrett said gas has been leaking off and on from the pipe, and the gas company recently did a major repair there. He said the department was prompted to test the gas levels there Monday after getting a call about a hissing sound coming from the pipe. He said the area is not populated and there was no need to evacuate anyone.
