YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown SteelHounds re-signed defenseman Jeff Alcombrack for the 2007-08 season. Terms of the deal, announced by coach and director of hockey operations Kevin Kaminski, were not disclosed.

Alcombrack, 27, has been with the SteelHounds since their first season, joining the club in a trade Oct. 28, 2005 from Austin.

In 92 career games with the SteelHounds, the Kincardine, Ontario native ranks third in franchise history with 74 points, including 12 goals and 62 assists. He is the franchise’s all-time leading scoring defenseman.

“We are extremely happy to have Jeff back with us this season,” said Kaminski. “In watching him play last season, I saw him grow into not only an all-star caliber hockey player but a tremendous leader on and off the ice. He will lead the charge of the defensive unit this season and be a key component to our success. His ability to see the ice and create scoring chances is on level with the best in the CHL and I know he will build off last year.”

Career numbers

Last season the 6-foot, 200-pound defenseman posted career highs with 52 points (eighth among CHL defensemen), 43 assists (sixth) and 60 penalty minutes, while scoring nine goals. He finished third on the team in points and assists and was tops among all SteelHounds defensemen in points.

He finished fifth on the SteelHounds with a plus-17 plus/minus rating and second with 25 power play assists. In six playoff games, Alcombrack scored two goals with four assists.

During the 2005-06 season with Youngstown, Alcombrack got off to a great start with 22 points (three goals and 19 assists) in 28 games but suffered a season-ending leg injury Jan. 3.

Alcombrack is just short of veteran status, playing 262 career CHL games with Memphis, New Mexico, Odessa, Austin and Youngstown. He has scored 27 goals with 101 assists in five CHL seasons.
