Baseball youth camp
set August 7-9
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State's baseball coaching staff will hold a summer youth camp for boys and girls ages 6-to-14 on August 7-9 at the Liberty Youth Complex.
The camp will be a three-day session at Youth Complex located on Route 304 in Liberty, just off of Belmont Ave. The camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily.
The sessions will focus on introducing the aspects and fundamentals of baseball to campers. Tuesday's and Thursday's hitting and pitching workouts will videotaped.
All players, including catchers, will need to bring their own equipment and baseball spikes may be worn.

MIDDLEFIELD — Bob Timko of Girard, competing in the 14-15 year old division, placed first as he shot 35-38—73 in the North Coast Junior Tournament at Grandview Golf Club.
Fast-pitch league
seeks participants
HUBBARD — The Hubbard Community Youth League will be sponsoring a girls fast-pitch league.
Games will be played on Sundays. The league needs a commitment by Aug. 1.

on road in Chardon
CAMPBELL — The Ohio Red Bulls’ semi-pro football team will be on the road this week to play a game against the North Coast Vikings in Chardon at 7 p.m. in the Lake Erie Division of the North American Football League.
The Red Bulls, coached by Will Smith, are coming off a season-opening 29-3 win over the Beaver County Warriors last Saturday in Leetsdale, Pa., in an NAFL Lake Erie Division game.
The Red Bulls’ home opener is June 30 at 7 p.m. against the Ohio Invaders at John Knapick Field in Campbell Memorial Stadium
Hardhats have home
test tonight at South
YOUNGSTOWN — The Steel Valley Hardhats’ semi-professional football team, which has won of 11 of its last 13 games extending back to last season, will play host to the Mansfield Marauders today at South Field at 5 p.m. in a Mid Ohio Football League game.
The Hardhats (1-0), an ages 18-and-over area squad coached by Mark Greene, posted a 10-2 record in its first season last year as a member of the Ohio Valley Football League to win the championship.
The OVFL since has changed its name this year to the 10-team MOFL.
The Hardhats are in the same division with the Marauders, Mid-Ohio Jets and Springfield Knights.
The Hardhats opened their season last Saturday at South by outlasting the Cleveland Cardinals in overtime, 14-8, in an MOFL game.
The Hardhats’ third game of the season will be an inter-league contest on June 30 at South at 5 p.m. against the Mahoning Valley Tigers of the North American League.

Pirates claim Phelps
off waiver wire
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed first baseman-catcher Josh Phelps off waivers from the New York Yankees on Friday.
Phelps was expected to join the Pirates today for their game against the Los Angeles Angels.
The 29-year-old Phelps was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Tuesday. He hit .263 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 36 games for New York. Phelps is a career .268 hitter with 59 homers and 224 RBIs with Toronto, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and the Yankees. He batted .309 in part-time duty with the Blue Jays in 2002 and hit 20 home runs the next year.
Dellucci out 8 weeks
with hamstring injury
WASHINGTON — Cleveland Indians left fielder David Dellucci will require surgery for his injured hamstring and will be sidelined about eight weeks. Dellucci was hurt while running out a grounder during Tuesday’s 9-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. An MRI exam revealed a high-grade tear in his left hamstring. He will have surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.
“This is not career-ending; this is not career-threatening,” trainer Lonnie Soloff said. “He will return to 100 percent at some point this year.”
Signed to a three-year contract as a free agent on Dec. 6, he is hitting .234 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 54 games.
