Sign to be dedicated to ex-senator

LAKE MILTON — For his contributions to the betterment of Lake Milton, former state Sen. Harry Meshel will be the honored guest at an upcoming dedication and ceremony.

Officials announced at Tuesday’s trustees meeting that a large sign bearing Meshel’s name will be unveiled at the event, tentatively set to begin at 11 a.m. July 20 at Lake Milton State Park near Milton Avenue and Northeast River Road.

In the mid-1980s, Meshel was instrumental in securing about $6 million to repair the nearby dam that otherwise would have been breached, recalled Leni Schulz, township fiscal officer. A few years later, and despite a lot of opposition, Meshel was successful in getting a portion of property that abuts the lake converted to a state park. He also got funding for other related projects, Schulz noted.

Among those expected to attend the ceremony are officials from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Mahoning County commissioners, the fiscal officer continued.
