Early lead helps key Scrappers to 6-1 win

First round pick Beau Mills had two hits for Mahoning Valley.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers jumped out to a quick lead and went on to defeat the Jamestown Jammers, 6-1, in a New York-Penn League Thursday night at Russell Diethrick Park.

Beau Mills, the first round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, and Todd Martin had two hits apiece for the Scrappers (2-1), who scored two runs in the first inning and four more in the second — all charged to Jamestown starter Jay Voss (0-1).

Juan Valdes drove in two runs, without getting a hit. He grounded into a force out in the first inning, which scored Mark Thompson, then Mills scored in the second inning on Valdes’ groundout.

Alex Castillo had a double for the Scrappers, who were outhit, 11-8, for the game.

In fact, Mahoning Valley was held to just one hit after the second inning.

Scrappers starter Alan Brech (1-0) pitched five shutout innings, allowing six hits. Bret Carlin and Kyle Landis followed with three scoreless frames before Nathan Bunton allowed a run in the ninth.

Justin Jacobs, Thomas Hickman and Ben Lasater all had two hits for Jamestown.
