YOUNGSTOWN — Police have identified a man gunned down on Ellenwood Avenue as Charles E. Allen, 33, of East Philadelphia Avenue. Allen, shot in the lower back, remained in critical condition Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police were called to the 100 block of Ellenwood around 8:45 p.m. Monday to investigate reports of a shooting and found Allen lying face down in a grassy field near the street. He was able to tell officers that a man wearing a red shirt and blue jeans shot him.

Hearing set in stabbing

NILES — A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 27 for a Bristol Township man charged with stabbing a Niles man while in a tavern. David D. Donofrio, 57, of Bristol Champion Townline Road, has been released from the city jail after posting a $7,500 bond on a charge of felonious assault. Police reported being called Sunday to Gasoline Alley, 500 Vienna Ave., and found Kevin Conway, 25, of Niles, on the floor. Conway told police that he was in an argument with a man who pulled a knife and stabbed him. Conway remains in St. Elizabeth Health Center. His condition was not available Tuesday.

Rings stolen from store

BOARDMAN — A Southern Park Mall store is out about $30,000 in jewelry after three men distracted employees and took six solitaire rings. Employees at Fred Meyer Jewelers told police that three men came into the store Monday afternoon. One asked to see some watches while the other two went to the ring case. One employee helped the man at the watches while a second employee helped with the rings. When the men had left, employees noticed a tray of rings missing. They reviewed the store video and saw that as one man distracted the employee, holding a ring, the other reached into the case and grabbed the tray of rings, hiding them in his shirt.

Man tumbles into river

SHARON, Pa. — A disabled man tumbled into the Shenango River after his motorized wheelchair hit a bump. Sharon Police Chief Mike Menster said people who saw 76-year-old Earl Biggart fall into the water helped pull him out and called police and firefighters for assistance. Menster said Biggart was moving along the riverwalk near the Connelly Bridge when his chair hit a bump and tipped over at 12:51 p.m. Tuesday. He rolled down an embankment and into the water. The fire department had to strap Biggart to a board and pull the board up a ladder that was placed on the steep hillside. He was taken to Sharon Regional Health System’s hospital for treatment.

Electronics collection

CANFIELD — The Mahoning County commissioners’ Reuse and Recycling Division — The Green Team — will have an electronics recycling collection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Gate 5 of the Canfield Fairgrounds. Accepted items include old computers, monitors, printers, table-top faces and copiers, DVD and VCR units, phones, keyboards and keyboard mice. Those items will be accepted for free, but there is a $5 charge for television sets.

Justice grant awarded

WARREN — Four law enforcement agencies in Trumbull County have received a total of $57,014 through a Justice Assistance Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to purchase or upgrade equipment. Warren will receive $38,485; Niles, $11,680; Warren Township, $7,593; and the sheriff’s department, $19,253. The money will be used to purchase radio equipment and in-car cameras.

Tree planting ceremony

YOUNGSTOWN — The city will celebrate Youngstown Tree Day with a “Tree City Planting Ceremony” at 10:15 a.m. Thursday in front of city hall on West Boardman Street, between South Phelps and South Hazel streets. Youngstown will be planting a new native species where an abandoned grate and trash receptacle now cover a slice of sidewalk designated for green space.
