Hiring steps

Hiring and training procedures for deputies in the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department:

Criminal record check.

Check with current and former employers.

House-to-house background check
with neighbors.

Educational records check going back to high school.

Posting of applicants’ names in deputies’ roll-call rooms, to determine whether deputies who know them have any comments concerning their suitability for the job.

Written personality and behavior test.

Applicants write and submit a short autobiography.

Panel interview with command staff.

Drug test.

Hire or no-hire decision.

Two-week orientation.

136-hour state-mandated basic
corrections officer training, including classroom lecture concerning law, ethics and professionalism; self-defense and communications skills instruction.

Shadowing of experienced deputies to learn the job, with the average time from hiring to solo duty in a pod being about two months.
