McDonald Steel starts production on new furnace

McDONALD — McDonald Steel Corp. started production on its new $7.5 million furnace and announced other major changes to its business.

The producer of specialty steel shapes said today that it changed the structure of its top management and started a new manufacturing operation within its mill.

The reheat furnace replaces two 80-year-old furnaces. Newer technology will save money by cutting natural gas usage by two-thirds, improving product quality and cutting maintenance costs.

Bricmont Inc. of Canonsburg, Pa., designed and installed the new furnace, with work starting last year. A two-week trial run of the furnace ended successfully today.
