Malenic, Turner, Carissimi heading into bowling ‘hall’


The Greater Youngstown Bowling Association Hall of Fame dinner is July 1.

YOUNGSTOWN — Robert J. Malenic, Russell J. Turner and Samuel Carissimi will be the latest inductees into the Greater Youngstown Bowling Association Hall of Fame when the group’s dinner is held July 1 at the ITAM Centre on Meridian Road.

Samuel Carissimi

Carissimi started at the junior level in 1979 and has been bowling for 29 years. He has had 30 sanctioned 300 games, a high three-game series of 843 (March 14, 2007) and a high average of 228.

Carissimi has bowled in the St. Dominic’s League at Marvondale, Eight Ball at Holiday, King Arthur Men’s, Outdoorsmen and Original Church at Camelot and Society Mixed at Wedgewood.

He has bowled in one Ohio state tournament, 20 city tournaments, the Youngstown Masters and the Mar-Hill Mixed Doubles at Amron.

His best finishes are: city (2nd in team event; 2nd doubles event and 2nd all-events in 2007), Masters (runner-up in 1990), Mar-Hill Mixed Doubles (winner, 1999). His city tournament doubles partner in 2007 was Ron Jones and his Mar-Hill-winning partner in 1999 was Kim Bossone.

His 2006-2007 season also included two perfect games, two 299 games and an 11-in-a-row game.

Robert Malenic

He’s been bowling for over 50 years, starting in 156.

Malenic bowled in the Tuesday Nite Men, Austintown Suburban, Camuso Concrete and Pioneer leagues (Wedgewood); Outdoorsmen (Camelot); Boardman Suburban (Boardman) and Orchard Park (Gran Lanes).

He also bowled in the Packard League at Echo Lanes in Warren.

Malenic has a high game of 259, a top three-game series of 619 and a high average of 180.

He has bowled in 10 Youngstown city tournaments.

At Wedgewood, he has been Tuesday Nite Men’s secretary for 23 years, was its vice-president and is currently the Tuesday Nite Men’s president.

Malenic has vast experience of ABC and USBC rules and he is gracious in sharing his knowledge for the betterment of the sport locally.

He was prompt in dispatching his duties, including the distribution of weekly standings⁄averages data.

Malenic has earned the respect and admiration of bowlers, secretaries, league officials and proprietors.

He was also the GYBA’s secretary of the year in 1992.

Russ Turner

The career of Turner’s goes back to 1948 and he has participated in sanctioned leagues in the sport for 53 years. He has two 300 games, a high three-game series of 787 and high average of 215.

Turner has been a GYBA director for 14 yars and has been a vice-president for five.

He has been a Boardman Businessmen’s League member for 18 years and Boardman Lanes Summer Doubles bowler for 14 years. He had a 10-year term as president of the Dublets League in which he bowled 18 years and he was a seven-year president of the Valley Mixed League in which he participated 10 years. Of Turner’s five years in the City “Y” League, four were as secretary-treasurer. He also bowled three years in Dr. John’s Trio.

Turner has been in three USBC ABC tournaments, eight Ohio state tournaments and 15 city tournaments. His highest city finish was sixth in singles.

More honors

Turner won the Youngstown Seniors (B division) and the team event in the National Guard tournament. He was also National Guard tournament singles runner-up and 2nd in the National Guard all-events category.

He also had 299 and 298 games and 11-in-a-row.

His first game was with duck pins at Champion Recreation in 1948. His first sanctioned league was Riblet’s at Idora Lanes in 1954. Turner’s first sanctioned achievement award was in 1957 (most improved average).

He has been co-chairman of the city tournament and member of the joint committee for the Youngstown Masters. He also attended national conventions.

In 2004, Turner was the GYBA director of the year.
