JFK grad to star in shows

PITTSBURGH — Scott Difford, 18, a graduate of Warren’s John F. Kennedy High School, will be performing in three upcoming shows with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera at the Benedum Center, one of which will feature Shirley Jones.

Difford will begin his debut with “Oklahoma,” which opens tonight, and will star with Jones, best known for her role as Mrs. Partridge in “The Partridge Family”, as Aunt Eller. Difford will also be performing in “White Christmas,” which opens July 3, and “Cats,” which opens July 24.

Armed robbery in Warren

WARREN — A masked thief got away with a small amount of money and credit cards during the armed robbery of a 24-year-old Newton Falls man at Quimby Park during the weekend.

The victim told police that he pulled his vehicle into the park to use the phone when a man wearing a handkerchief over his face approached him shortly after 1 a.m. and pulled a gun. After getting the victim’s wallet, the thief ran off.

Mosquito control

LIBERTY — Township officials have hired Alexander Pest Control to fog for mosquitoes from dusk to about 2 a.m. Monday and June 26. In the event of bad weather, fogging will take place on subsequent evenings.

Fountain to be replaced

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — New Castle City Council has agreed to pay G.B. Sand Co. $57,900 to replace the fountain on Kennedy Square. The fountain was destroyed just over a year ago when a truck lost its brakes and hit the square. The city is buying a new fountain from Robinson Iron of Alexander City, Ala., for about $31,000, officials said.

History/Mystery tours

LISBON — The Lisbon Landmark Foundation is sponsoring History/Mystery Tours through historic downtown Lisbon. The tours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. June 30 and will include many of the village’s century homes.

Candlelight Carriage will offer horse-drawn carriage and horse-drawn wagon rides. Personally guided walking tours are also available. Each tour will last about 60 to 90 minutes. The cost is $20 for carriage rides, $15 for wagon rides and $10 for guided walking tours.

Funds will go to help preserve the village’s structures and history, said Carla Douglass, executive director of the Lisbon Area Chamber of Commerce.

Costumed volunteers will be available at the structures that include the Ivystone Tavern, Brewer House, Erastus Eells Home, Friends Meeting House, the Leppar House and stations along the Underground Railroad.

The Lisbon Historical Society plans to open the Train Station Museum and the Stone House during the tour hours. For more information or to make reservations, call the chamber at (330) 424-1803.
