Shock 75, Sun 72

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Cheryl Ford had 14 points and 16 rebounds and Detroit remained undefeated. Nykesha Sales brought the Sun within 71-70, but Ford put back her own miss to give the defending WNBA champions a three-point lead with 19.3 seconds to go. Whalen drove the lane and flipped up an off-balance shot that went in as she was fouled, but she missed the tying free throw. Katie Smith hit two free throws to make it 75-72 with 13 seconds to go, and Katie Douglas missed a tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer. Deanna Nolan added 18 points for Detroit. Sales led the Sun with 18 points, while Whalen had 16.

Mercury 89, Fever 78

INDIANAPOLIS — Cappie Pondexter scored 22 points and Diana Taurasi added 21 as Phoenix snapped Indiana’s four-game winning streak. Kelly Miller added nine points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Mercury. Tamika Catchings had 17 points and 15 rebounds and Tammy Sutton-Brown scored 17 points for the Fever, who lost at home for the first time this season.

Sparks 89, Mystics 80

WASHINGTON — Christi Thomas scored a career-high 25 points for Los Angeles, which nearly lost a 13-point lead in the second half before holding on. The Mystics cut the Sparks’ lead to 79-77 when Alana Beard hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute left. But Kiesha Brown answered with a 3 for Los Angeles and the Sparks went 7-of-8 from the free throw line to end the game. LaToya Thomas scored 12 points for the Sparks. The Mystics got 20 points from reserve Monique Currie.

Sky 73, Liberty 66

CHICAGO — Candice Dupree had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Chicago over New York. Stacey Dales had 11 points for Chicago (5-5), which matched its win total from a year ago. Armintie Price had 10 rebounds and six assists, and Dominique Canty added 10 points for the Sky, who won for the fourth time in six games. Shameka Christon scored 18 points for New York (6-3), which has lost three of four after starting the season 5-0. Tiffany Jackson added 17 points for the Liberty.
