Tressel, Heacock slated at Camp of Champions

Cardinal Mooney.

YOUNGSTOWN — Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel will join YSU coach Jon Heacock in headlining Cardinal Mooney’s annual Camp of Champions July 9-10.

The camp, now in its sixth year, is open to students entering grades 4-9 and costs $60 and 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 both days.

“It’s one of the top camps in the country and we feel proud we’re able to provide this for the Valley,” said Mooney defensive coordinator Ron Stoops. “All the coaches who come are motivated by trying to help young people through inspirational thoughts and words.”

Other guest instructors include University of Arizona coach Mike Stoops (a Mooney High graduate), Kansas coach Mark Mangino (New Castle), LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini (Mooney), Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops (Mooney), Penn State offensive coordinator Jay Paterno, Kansas wide receiver coach Tim Beck (Mooney), Akron running backs coach Reno Ferri (Mooney), Stanford defensive line coach D.J. Durkin (Boardman), Kent State defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis (Youngstown State), Illinois offensive line coach Eric Wolford (Ursuline), Waynesburg coach Rick Shepas (Mooney), New England Patriots scout Tim Pichette (Mooney) and Georgetown defensive line coach Frank Colaprete (Mooney).

“Obviously, it should be a proud accomplishment for the area that so many of these local guys play and coach in college,” said Stoops. “It’s great to have them all together, sharing their ideas and knowledge with young people in our area.”
