Ryan supports request

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, issued his support to Gov. Ted Strickland’s May 26 request that Ohio National Guard troops receive the training and equipment necessary to perform their mission. On Monday, Ryan sent a letter to President Bush requesting personal assurances that every Ohio soldier will have up-to-date equipment, including body armor and armored humvees.

VETERANS

VA directors conference

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. — The 60th annual conference of Pennsylvania’s County Veterans Affairs directors will be June 19-21 at the Radisson Hotel here. About 150 are expected to attend. The featured speaker will be Pennsylvania Adjutant Gen. Jessica L. Wright. Wright has held the Cabinet position since March 2004, and is in charge of all Air and Army National Guard units allocated to Pennsylvania, six state-owned veterans’ homes, Scotland School for Veteran’s Children and programs for Pennsylvania’s 1.1 million veterans. A Monessen native, Wright was the first female aviator in the Army National Guard.

Taking donations for sale

YOUNGSTOWN — The Belmont Avenue Veterans Administration clinic is accepting donations for its summer flea market and bake sale to be June 19. Clinic volunteers request that no clothing donations be made. Donations can be dropped off the morning of the sale.

Program scheduled

YOUNGSTOWN — Park Vista presents a program for veterans at 10 a.m. June 26 at its Gathering Room, 1216 Fifth Ave. If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for receiving assistance with expenses such as assisted living, personal home health care and skilled nursing. Veterans and their surviving spouses can talk to speaker Moses Murphy, services officer, Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission, about the matter. HONORS

Receives ROTC award

Army ROTC Cadet Kaitlyn K. Brye is one of 273 cadets to receive the 2007 George C. Marshall ROTC award. The award is named in honor of the WWII general who outlined a program of economic assistance and recovery for war-torn Europe. It is presented to the outstanding Army ROTC cadet senior students. Brye is part of the University of Akron’s ROTC detachment in Lexington, Va. She is a 2003 graduate of Beaver Local High School in Lisbon.
