Final jail pod reopens
YOUNGSTOWN — With the arrival of 50 additional federal inmates this week, the final 36-bed prisoner housing unit in Mahoning County’s main jail will open Wednesday, the sheriff’s department said Monday.
Also on Monday, the final group of 20 deputies hired to enable full reopening of county jail facilities began training classes, said Maj. James Lewandowski of the sheriff’s department.
An additional 50 federal inmates are to arrive by Sept. 10 as the county’s misdemeanor jail reopens for overnight use, Lewandowski said. This will bring the county to its expected total of 150 revenue-generating federal prisoners, for which the federal government pays the county $68.84 per inmate per day, he added. The 96-bed misdemeanor jail closed due to lack of funding in March 2005.
