Mahoning County TB levy expected to be on fall ballot

AUSTINTOWN — Tuberculosis still exists in Mahoning County, not in large numbers, but enough so renewal of the county’s .10-mill TB levy remains important, health officials say.

The TB levy generates $180,000 a year, which is used to operate the TB Clinic in the Mill Creek Community Center at 496 Glenwood Ave. on Youngstown’s South Side.

The clinic conducts tuberculosis screening for employees who work in certain jobs, such as food service and those who work with pregnant women and small children, as well as those with symptoms of the disease.

The Mahoning County District Board of Health, under whose auspices the clinic operates, voted unanimously today to support renewal of the five-year levy, which expires Dec. 31, and request certification from the county auditor.
