Commissioner concerned about referendum costs

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — At least one Lawrence County commissioner is having second thoughts about a ballot referendum allowing voters to study Lawrence County’s form of government.

Commissioner Steve Craig said the county elections director has estimated the cost of putting this matter on the ballot at $50,000.

“I haven’t heard from anybody in the public that they want to proceed and given the cost I’m concerned about the direction we’re headed,” Craig said.

County Elections Director Marlene Gabriel sent commissioners a memo earlier this month stating that she believed the costs of a government study referendum would be about $50,000.
