Son of former Youngstown mayor to run for commissioner

YOUNGSTOWN — Eric C. Ungaro, the son of former longtime Youngstown Mayor Patrick Ungaro, is making another attempt at elected office.

The younger Ungaro, of Poland, plans to run next year in the Democratic primary for a Mahoning County commissioner seat.

Commissioners Anthony Traficanti of Poland and John McNally IV of Youngstown, both Democrats, are up for re-election in 2008. Ungaro hasn’t announced which seat he is seeking.

Ungaro unsuccessfully ran in 1999 for Youngstown’s 3rd Ward council position, receiving less than 42 percent of the vote against Republican Richard Atkinson.

Ungaro has a master’s degree in education administration from Westminster College and a bachelor of science degree in education from Youngstown State University. He works as a special education teacher and varsity football defensive coordinator for the Howland school district.

“Mahoning County needs a public servant who has the courage and strong desire to act independently and aggressively while maintaining an attitude of cooperation amongst the diverse population of the county,” he said.

Because of the early March presidential primary in 2008, the filing deadline is Jan. 4.
