Pa. congressman profiled in Time magazine

Less than seven months on the job and U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, who represents Lawrence County and a portion of Mercer County in Congress, is the subject of a profile article in Time magazine.

The two-page article in the magazine’s July 30 issue uses Altmire, a freshman Democrat from McCandless, Pa., as an example of what it calls the “Democratic Iraq Dilemma.”

The article reads: “Altmire, like many of the other 30 newly elected Democratic freshmen, must serve two masters if he hopes to win re-election in his narrowly divided district — the Democrats who elected him in the hopes of ending the war and voters who still largely support the military effort in Iraq and are turned off by Democratic attempts to force [President] Bush’s hand.”

The article — which can be accessed at http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1645163,00.html — focuses on how Altmire answers questions from constituents including Eugene Gabriel and Arlene Carr of New Castle, Pa., about the Iraq war.
