Boardman to host state Little League event
BOARDMAN —Boardman Community Baseball will host its first Little League state tournament.
The Junior League (ages 13-14) baseball tournament will open Saturday at the Fields of Dreams on McClurg Road.
The event is scheduled through July 27.
Boardman (32-0), winner of Tri-T Pony League, will represent District 2 in the event. Boardman also won the Chuck Shafer Memorial Scholarship Tournament hosted by BCB and were regional champions as 13 year olds in the Pony 13 Tournament, losing to New Bedford, Mass., in the zone finals.
Eight other teams will compete for the state crown and a berth in the regional tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Junior League World Series will be played in Taylor, Mich., from Aug. 12-18.
Boardman’s first game will be played Saturday at 10 a.m. against Rock Hill (District 11).
Greg Krieger, tournament director, said that all 16 games will be broadcast live and streamlined on WKBN’s radio Web site (www.570wkbn.com).
Coming to the Mahoning Valley are these teams: Conneaut or Ashtabula American (District 1); Elyria (District 3), North Canton (District 4); Bucyrus (District 7), Eaton (District 8) and Maumee (District 10)
Districts 5 and 6 have no teams qualifying while the District 9 team has not been determined.
Last year, Boardman’s 14-year-old team won the state event that was hosted in Ashtabula.
